I find that I often have a clumsy cursor and drag icons off my Dock without noticing. I got so annoyed by this that I made a little app to simply lock or unlock the contents of the Dock. Iit sits on your Dock as an app icon and when clicked it runs, locks or unlocks your Dock and then relaunches it, changing the icon to show if the Dock is currently locked or unlocked. One click. No opening the app and clicking on a button or anything unnecessary like that. The user can specify in the preferences exactly which aspects of the Dock get locked or unlocked, as well as if they need to provide a password before DockLock will run. It is perhaps most suited, though, to deploying on school computers, library computers, office computers where there's a set Dock that needs to be locked down without overly restricting the users access to other areas of the computer.

The small padlock icon sits at the top left corner of the last resident app on your Dock. Here it shows the Dock is unlocked.

After clicking the DockLock icon the Dock is locked and the Dock restarted. The icon now shows the Dock is locked!
